There’s been a huge trend to get away from that modern look. You know the one i’m on about, futuristic, metallic, smooth black and deep creams. Old is the new, new and it looks great.
Everything about the farm house look screams basic, simplistic and minimal. The idea is to make it look like you haven’t decorated in a while, or haven’t decorated at all. And it works incredibly well ( even though it does sound stupid at first) Here take a look:
#1 Use Giant Letters
It’s a very simple concept that can add a warm feeling to any room. Other people choose to write the likes of “Home”, “Love”, “Live” on their walls, as a daily reminder to be grateful for all you have.
#2 Flowerpot Watering Cans
We’ve featured watering cans in our other posts and there’s a reason they’ve turned up twice. It’s because of the character these can add to any room/garden. It gives the flowers a more of a “natural” look too them, as if to say, these haven’t been pruned, they just turned out this way because our home is awesome.
#3 Bare Wood Table Tops
Bare wood tops is a must for any farm house look. From your kitchen counter tops, to your chest of draws. The more basic, less varnished they look, the better.
#4 Turquoise Blue Furniture
Turquoise blue is a popular choice of paint when selecting furniture in a farm styled house. These go from dining room tables to the sides of cabinets. They add a vintage feeling and you get extra points if they have the old style draw handles.
#5 Rustic Wood
Again keeping with the wood, there’s another rule. Your wood has to look rustic. That means sanding the paint off in random laces, sanding the wood down in general and making it look old and weathered.
#6 Concrete Bathroom Counter Tops
We did warn you at the beginning that farm houses have a very “basic” feeling to them. But you have to agree this sink looks awesome. I want it!
#7 Jar Light Fixtures
It wouldn’t be a 10’s list without some basic DIY, that you could do today. Jam Jars. You can buy them in most stores (without the Jam) and either place candles in them like these guys have. Or drill LEDs into them (carefully).
#8 Rustic Wooden Beam Mantle Shelves
Another great option is to have a rustic wooden beam, but use it as a shelf. It again gives that feeling that “You don’t care” but it works so well, which is what makes it cool.
# 9 Old Chairs
Another great pastel colour. These chairs are also a must, but you don’t have to get a rocking chair. It just has to be basic in design and you get bonus points if it features a pastel colour like the above. You could go further and give ti a rustic feeling by sanding away at the paint.
#10 Giant Stone Floors
This is totally preference. Some people prefer wood, but we love the contrast of having a stone floor with wooden furniture. Also if you live in the countryside, i’m sure you’ll agree stone is a lot easier to clean than wood… but it can get cold in the winter.
